ReplyDeleteCALLA (Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach)
After reading the article and what was discussed during class, I found myself in the place of the student. I can only imagine the challenges that learners with limited english, in speaking and writing face daily. As an educator, it is my duty and responsibility to ensure that various strategies shall be afforded to all learners. Students with limited english can succeed, however; it will take a community effort to ensure that not one child is left behind.
QUOTE:
I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework. ~Lily Tomlin as "Edith Ann
Students are not black and white prints, but are colorful creatures of God who are in need to explore the unknown.
I always found myself as an ESL student in school. No matter how far I am in my education, I always find myself as an ESL student. As an educator, I want to take the same responsibility as you mentioned above. Because I have the experience as an ESL student, I want to make sure the lessons deliver the way the students can grasp the concepts much easier and faster.
DeleteCALLA is an approach to help students become proficient so they will be able to take part in content directed instructions. The three components of CALLA such as learning strategies, development of academic language and a related curriculum incorporated into the ESL program to helps teachers know how to implement different learning strategies so that students can grasp the concepts of the content being taught much easier and faster.
ReplyDeleteWhat I've learned is that all learners can learn if effective teachers are in place to carry forth the curriculum, efficiently and with integrity. I have personally witnessed "coloring" as a way of teaching our ESL students. One concept that I share with my students is that "all students are treated equally with their learning despite one's ethnicity."
